How do i deal with a disruptive teammate?

im the captain of my hockey team , i make sure my team is like a family and works hard , but we have a player on our team that is very disruptive and very selfish , and to make matters worst he is on the top line with me , he doesn't pass , he has a horrible work ethic , and he cherry picks , i've talked to my head coach about it and he doesn't want to get involved because he says thats my job as the captain , so i mentioned my problems to him as nicely as i could and things have just gotten worse because he is trying to prove a point to me , i need ideas on how im suppose to correct this situation because the playoffs are coming and with this kid playing like he is we will not last very long
